“So I am delighted that thousands more people are making use of this programme with thousands more set to benefit across England in the coming year.” Professor Valabhji said: “Research is clear that weight loss where indicated goes a long way to helping people stay well and avoiding preventable illness, and in many cases it can be the trigger for putting Type 2 diabetes into remission. Today Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS England’s national clinical director for diabetes and obesity will announce the rollout, at Diabetes UK Professional Conference, as he highlights the latest findings from the programme. Studies have found that in the first two years of the programme, it costs around £600 more than the typical healthcare costs for those with Type 2 diabetes. Under the scheme, patients referred by their GP are given “total diet replacement” products including soups and shakes consisting of 800 to 900 kilocalories a day for 12 weeks, with supervision and support from coaches and clinicians.Īfter this, they are given a plan to reintroduce healthy nutritious food, backed by group sessions, one to one counselling or online support. Recent studies found that diabetes could remain in remission for at least five years, following such an intervention.Įxperts on Wednesday night said they were “thrilled” to see the national rollout of the programme across England, meaning that anyone diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the last six years should be eligible for it.Ĭurrently, the programme is offered in 21 areas of England. Pilot schemes have found the programme achieves average two stone in weight loss in three months, with clinical trials suggesting this is enough to reverse around half of diabetes cases. Health officials said every part of the country will offer the regime by next March, as part of efforts to tackle Britain’s diabetes timebomb. The NHS is to roll out “soup and shakes” diets across the country, with tens of thousands of patients eligible for the diet to reverse Type 2 diabetes.
